About us

Mother Tongue Books is an online bookstore selling bilingual children's books for children aged 0-14 years old.

My name is Andrea Nagy Lee and I am the founder of Mother Tongue Books. As you can see from my name I am half English and Half Hungarian. With this bit of personal info your next question may well be, do you speak Hungarian? to which my answer, sadly for all of my 42 years has been a very disapointing no. What an opportunity missed. Oh how I wish it were different and I was fluently bilingual. Oh how I wish I could totally connect with my Hungarian family without the need for translation. Hence the passion behind this site. So why don't you learn Hungarian? I hear you cry, well, I'm trying and have done on many an occasion and gladly I am getting somewhere with this minority language, very unlike any other in Europe. My father is 73 now and I hope I get a chance to have a really good Hungarian conversation with him.

So, what else about Mother Tongue Books? Well, we embrace the cultural diversity in Britain today. We aim to encourage children and young adults to use their mother tongue, helping to retain their cultural heritage and nurture individual identity.

Research has revealed that over 300 languages are spoken by children in London Schools, making the capital the most linguistically diverse cultural and multilingual city in the world -

We hope that foreign families with children who have moved to Britain, and families living in Britain with a dual nationality will embrace this site.

Many educational sources have detailed the positive effect of learning English as an additional language alongside the learning of either a mother tongue or other foreign language spoken in your home. These children are gaining higher GCSE grades than those whose first language is left by the wayside.
